Michigan parents whose children are in college or about to enter college are rightly concerned about the rising cost of education. Over the past few decades, no price has risen more than the cost of a college education. According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost at public universities has increased by 179.2% over the past 20 years, outpacing inflation by 171.5%. This massive increase in costs has forced parents and students into massive debt and compelled taxpayers to shell out ever-increasing sums of state dollars.
Most parents are now demanding answers about what is driving up those costs and what they are getting for the debt they are forced to bear. The answer to these questions will cause even more anger among parents in Michigan.
We all see red tape at the local level of education driving up the cost of educating our children in K-12 systems, but at the university level, it’s even worse. One of the main issues is the effort to impose a “woke” curriculum on our college campuses and force parents and students to foot the bill. The way they enforce this agenda in our universities is through something called Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
FoxNews.com recently quoted Jay Greene, senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for Education Policy, as suggesting that the goal is not just to create a more diverse student body and faculty, but “Instead, the effective purpose of diversity, equity and inclusion is to create political orthodoxy and to enforce that political orthodoxy, which fundamentally distorts intellectual and political life on campus. And the cost of this effort n is not cheap.
The same article quoted Mark Perry, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and professor emeritus of economics at the University of Michigan, on the enormous costs of DEI efforts at the U of M. He said the administrative burden at across the university is huge with every school, college and university department hiring diversity officers, and called it “shocking” that no evidence is available showing an improvement in “racial climate, tolerance and of student well-being. But we can see the costs.
Parents, students, and taxpayers spend $11.8 million a year on DEI staff salaries, $3.8 million on benefits, and $431,000 on DEI’s top salary director alone of this type across the country. The massive salary of the DEI director contrasts with the average salary of $174,000 per year for full professors at UM.
So the parents and children of Michigan are paying over $15 million a year for a bureaucracy whose main purpose is the political indoctrination of our children, without providing them with an education to help them pay off the huge debt that they contract on campus.
Governor Whitmer and her Liberal allies may believe that such political indoctrination is worth the amount of debt our children are saddled with.
I do not!
Every year, our state universities come to the Legislature asking for more taxpayer support at the same time they demand even higher tuition, and that’s what she stands for. Not anymore. Under a Rinke administration, these efforts to indoctrinate our children will end or state funding to support it will be cut.
Michigan families are tired of the ridiculous cost of education and the woke ideology that has been shoved down their throats. Enough is enough and I will complete both.
