CAIRO — The 68th annual Greene County Youth Fair kicked off Thursday morning with hundreds of youngsters displaying their farm animals and handicrafts.
The fair is held every year in the municipal park of Angelo Canna and this year’s event has a special meaning because it was held virtually in 2020 during the shutdown of COVID-19 and in a reduced version in 2021.
Forecasters predict mostly dry conditions throughout the fair over the next three days. There’s a 30% chance of showers on Friday, but sunny skies and seasonal temperatures in the mid to high 80s are expected Saturday and Sunday.
The fair is an opportunity for young people from Greene County to showcase their livestock, their crafts and their dedication to learning the skills needed on a farm.
Several large tents set up in the city park will serve as temporary shelters for exhibits of farm animals ranging from cows to poultry and more exotic animals like alpacas.
The spread of bird flu briefly prompted a ban on poultry shows and nearly scuttled one of the fair’s most popular elements, but the outbreak subsided and the state lifted the ban, allowing exhibitions to resume.
Vendors set up stalls to sell a variety of homemade items. There were also amusement vendors outside of the immediate area, such as WildPlay Thacher, an amusement park in Voorheesville, which offers guests adventures such as bungee jumping, skydiving and zip lines. WildPlay also specializes in confidence building exercises for corporate teams.
“I highly recommend coming with colleagues for team development,” said WildPlay manager Jen Dobies. “We can accommodate groups of all sizes and levels. It’s a great way to build trust and confidence.

The fair will go on, rain or shine, and admission is free. The Greene County Agricultural Society, a nonprofit organization that focuses on developing agricultural practices in Greene County, is hosting the fair.
